This is a Twitter post referencing Howard Rheingold, who has taken up the term colearners in his continuing examination of the new information environment and learning. Howard is a long time advocate and promoter of the Internet, collaboration and new literacy. You can read more about Howard in his Wikipedia page, http://goo.gl/rinlz - dfw

Added lines 1087-1088:
One way is to model research. If we're expecting students to become researchers, should teachers also be public researchers. They should say in class, "I found this on the Internet last night, and this is how I found it." - dfw
Added lines 1093-1094:
This is a great question. I might give a hint by slightly rewording the question, "Are we empowering students to ask questions?" - dfw
Added lines 1099-1100:
I like TagCrowd, because it keeps everything horizontal, easier to read and analyze. If I want to learn something about a piece of text, by examining the words used most in it, then I use TagCrowd. Wordle does the same thing, but it's more about design than analysis. - dfw
Added lines 1105-1106:
That was the David Warlick web site, back before there were blogs. I'm not sure how many people use it now. Interstingly, the web sites linked to there are drawn from my Delicious bookmarks. - dfw

Added lines 1133-1134:
It's one of my favorite warlickisms ;-) ..and I think it speaks so much about the shifts that need to be made in society's notions of teaching and learning. - dfw
Added lines 1139-1140:
This is a fairly recent revaluation, that we become literate, not just so that we can read a newspaper or instructions at work, but in order to learn what you need to know, to do what you need to do. - dfw
Added lines 1145-1146:
You know, if students develop portfolios, and they are digitally available to the public, might the start to feel self-conscious if their work looks exactly like the work of a hundred other students. Might they be inspired to become more creative in their work, to stand apart? I don't know, but I know I would. - dfw
Added lines 1150-1151:
It's a good question. Frankly, I wish I had thought to keep my Facebook account personal, rather than letting 1,500 teachers friend me. Maintaining two Twitter accounts could be problematic. But another consideration is that educators are less likely to friend you, if most of your tweets are personal. With that in mind, it may be the best action to create a new account. - dfw

:-) Get use to it. See it as an adventure. You know, folks my age are not comfortable with all this uncertainty. So what do we get in return. We're living with uncertainty, but what its made possible is opportunity. When anything can happen, then anything is possible. I am increasingly dropping reference to the "21st century" and starting to use "the age of opportunity." - dfw
