Do you have the ability to kick users out of the chat? 18 Oct 2012 - 14:16:19

No! But I've only had one instance when there was a problem. Two guys dared each other to come up with the name of the most 1970s wrestlers. It was pretty funny. Fortunately, most of the tech-savvy teachers started conversing through a UStream page one of them set up. - dfw

''Knitter Chat is a person experiment. I am constantly hacking it, trying out new features. Here are some similar tools I would recommend your looking at.

  • Backchan -- http://backchan.nl
  • Chatzy -- http://chatzy.com
  • Today's Meet -- http://todaysmeet.com/ (my favorite)

A more wrinkled brain? I don't know. I admit, that if you ware were likely not paying as close attention to my talk as you might have otherwise. But I suspect that the upside is equal, as learners are learning from each other learning experiences. I certainly wouldn't do this all the time. - dfw
Added lines 55-56:
Thanks, I didn't know about this. But I'm not surprised that Richard Byrne would have such a page. - dfw
Added lines 61-62:
Hmmm, that's an interesting idea. Playing as learning, and learning as play. I like it. - dfw
Added lines 79-80:
It's much more adventurous -- game-like even. - dfw
Added lines 85-86:
Cool! I'm going to have to read that! - dfw
Added lines 143-144:
I'm really pushing hard this idea of teacher as master learner. I think that it could help to solve a lot of problems, not the least of which is teachers who are threatened to have technologies in the classroom that students are more comfortable with. If we are learners, it give us permission to learn from the students. - dfw
Added lines 157-158:
A lot of people talk about transparency in schooling. But I think we need to make adult, lifelong-learning transparent. Bring our personal learning habits and accomplishment into the classroom. - dfw
Added lines 171-172:
Oh yea! I still have my 10th grade slide rule. ;-) - dfw
Added lines 185-186:
Well, I use the number 34. Actually it comes from a book that was written about ten years ago, so it should be 44. But that just doesn't have the same impact. - dfw
Added lines 199-200:
My Dad, an accountant, use to bring home a machine he had to crank, in order for it to calculate. - dfw
Added lines 209-210:
:-) I'd be happy with 49! - dfw

That turned out to be a great demo, especially as the information didn't come from Wikipedia. - dfw
Added lines 237-238:
Yes, but also have them defend what they find, defend its appropriateness. - dfw

Yes! The last time I tried, it was flagged for deletion in less than 10 minutes. - dfw
Added lines 273-274:
Yes! But even more -- valuing objective truth. Expecting and demanding it. - dfw
Added lines 295-296:
It's a great demo, that I've done for a long time. - dfw
Added lines 313-314:
Yes, but I wonder if we are actually all visual learners. I mean, it's what we're wired for, isn't it. We have to be taught to read. - dfw
Added lines 327-328:
I agree! But I have to wonder if their learning practices might actually be more nature than sitting in a classroom, and paying attention. - dfw
Added lines 333-334:
Publishing eBooks appears to be quite easy. - dfw
Added lines 339-340:
I agree. It's not 100% there and there are problems. But it's the closest thing I've seen that is dedicated to infographics. - dfw

Too true! - dfw
Added lines 363-364:
This is going to sound weird and it will never happen. But I strongly feel that every teacher should have three to four hours of professional planning time every day. - dfw
Added lines 373-374:
Yes! But I'd rephrase it a bit. They know how to use the tech. They don't need it to teach them to use it. They need us to help them learn to "work" the tech. - dfw
Added lines 383-384:
But we have to go a whole lot further to describe these new learning sources -- rethink a lot about texts, and about teaching and learning. - dfw
Added lines 409-410:
Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! - dfw
