Mary Moak Thank you for validating the importance of Arts Education!

2 Jan 2012 - 10:46:08
Don't mention it. But we need to rethink the teaching of the creative arts. Because, as I said, we need to be pushing the arts for the very same reasons that we're pushing STEM. It's a huge part of how we provide for our wants and needs, global, locally and personally. Creative arts need to be about communication -- how do I best express this idea, this preference, this position? How do I do so in a way that is going to effectively convey the idea and also be compelling? - dfw

sally these are very scarey thoughts

2 Jan 2012 - 10:49:06
It's also very exciting. How do we not on prepare for these ideas and potential outcomes, but how do we harness them? How do we turn all this disruption into fuel? - dfw

Mary Moak How true...we do cut off their sense of connectedness.

2 Jan 2012 - 10:50:58
An we do it for the very best of reasons. But we need to come to respect their 'native' information experience and understand it. We use to complain about their IM speak way of typing with acronyms and symbols. Think about it. They created a new grammar that is perfect for this form of communication that will almost certainly be a part of their future -- and they did it collaboratively. We should be in awe! - dfw

Mary Moak Confirmed Marie Currie by Bing-ing her.

Audra You really hit the crux of the problem with technology. How do we use it to facilitate learning?

2 Jan 2012 - 10:54:02
But I will repeat something that I probably said in the keynote, that technology should not be our primary focus in rethinking education. It's the information. How do we use networked, digital and abundant information to craft new and relevant learning experiences for our students. - dfw

Mary Moak Developing a strategy for implementing their technology is something we must do.

2 Jan 2012 - 10:57:55
And I think that one way of thinking about it is rather than trying to come up with a way and show them, how might we provoke them to find ways of using their 'native' technologies. - dfw

sally It is wonderful to think of how closely linked technology is with the arts.

2 Jan 2012 - 11:01:37
You know, if you think about it, it always has been. Part of being a painter was the chemistry involved in making just the right color and just the right glisten or reflections of light. But a huge part of this that we must hold on to and do a better job of teaching is good story telling. The problem with television is not the clarity of the picture. The problem with television is good story telling. - dfw
