My 8 year old asks questions constantly! If I ever say "I don't know" he always says, "well look it up on your iphone!"

It's what I was saying, they have a sense that there is no unanswerable question. Answers are free! Of course that's not true. We have to work for the answers, look for reasons for considering one answer better than another one, do things with the answers, etc. We need to hope student learn that answers are not free. They require work. - dfw

Nothing complicated here. There's only one conversation. If I was working toward Knitter Chat being a publicly available tool, then I would have a way to distinguish conversations. Above, I listed some of the backchannel tools that you might use. - dfw

I am sure you are awesome, however your training assumes everyone has the technology you have spent 15 mins describing to be interactive.

I do not mean for this to be in anyway a belittling of your statement. But shouldn't I/we assume that the technology is available. Of course it isn't, but if it is next year or two years from now, it will be there because we expected it to be there. It simply is not reasonable to expect children to be made ready for their future by using 15th century technology. - dfw

my concern about relying on technology to teach a lesson is that there are may times when the techonology doesnt work, leaving u stranded...

That said, I think that the technology is becoming more reliable than it was, say, five years ago. - dfw

I know kids today

creating a vitual world with avatars takes a LOT of time. i have friends who are gamers and they spend hours getting their avatars perfect..

I agree. For me, I spent about a half hour and did everything my self. I lot of people got to the shops in Second Life and buy cool hair, cloths, facial hair, tattoos, etc. There is actually an economy there. People actually make a living designing digital assess (hair, etc.) which they sell in the Malls in SL. Weird? - dfw

I agree, the time it would take to teach the kids how to work the technology would be overwhelming.

I think scratch would be great at home with parents' help

You would be surprised how much faster they learn than we do. I met a 2 year old that knew how to open my iPhone, find angry birds and play

true... they do pick up things easier than we do

With all of this...there is something that is just as important...human interaction.

I agree that blogging is a great way to get the students writing. They get very excited to see people respond to their writings.

How far does this conversation reach? Could students talk between walls?

We tried giving laptops to every student. The amount of technical problems over ran the learning.

Personal Learning Networks are good. I've learned a lot from mine.
