David - 17 Aug 2011 - 9:17:44

Vert cool!

Trina - 17 Aug 2011 - 9:18:12

Awesome!

Patsy - 17 Aug 2011 - 9:20:35

excellent workshop, valuable, pertinent, timely, thank you

Patsy - 17 Aug 2011 - 10:08:30

I see that there was not much conversation in the last session.

Clovis - 17 Aug 2011 - 10:42:18

Maybe there will be more

Melanie - 17 Aug 2011 - 10:43:03

Very interesting info. Great presentation.

Melanie - 17 Aug 2011 - 12:30:43

I am certainly looking forward to reading your conversation

Clovis - 17 Aug 2011 - 13:59:44

Great!

Peggy - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:00:23

How does it go straight to this convo?

abrantley - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:00:33

how come I am not connected to the knitterchat in the classroom next door

Amie - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:01:04
Several people asked this question. Originally, I would establish a code for each event, and you would type your name and the event code. This would enable any number of classrooms to use Knitter Chat, as long as each had a unique code.
But the power of this too, in my humble opinion, is that the transcript is archived and added to the online handouts. So I decided to concentrate on that aspect.
''Knitterchat is a person experiment and in constant beta. I recommend the following free tools for your consideration:

My 8 year old asks questions constantly! If I ever say "I don't know" he always says, "well look it up on your iphone!"

Dave - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:35:11
It's what I was saying, they have a sense that there is no unanswerable question. Answers are free! Of course that's not true. We have to work for the answers, look for reasons for considering one answer better than another one, do things with the answers, etc. We need to hope student learn that answers are not free. They require work. - dfw

My battery is dead! Wanted to say, "Thanks for the info!"

Peggy - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:51:36
That's sad! This is going to be the next huge technological advancement -- a 12 hour batter. ;-) - dfw

Enjoyed your presentation!

Peggy - 17 Aug 2011 - 14:51:53

I'm sure you will be more talkative...

Clovis Muddybluster - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:25:01

How did it know what conversation to put me in?

L Cherry - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:26:22

Let's see if this works..

Michele De Leon - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:27:54

Cool

Michelle - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:28:08

I'm thinking you are placed into the conversation concerning the time of the training.

avmr - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:28:27
Nothing complicated here. There's only one conversation. If I was working toward Knitter Chat being a publicly available tool, then I would have a way to distinguish conversations. Above, I listed some of the backchannel tools that you might use. - dfw

Can we use this in class, or did he set it up just for this presentation?

Phyllis Wolfe - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:30:18
See above! - dfw

I am sure you are awesome, however your training assumes everyone has the technology you have spent 15 mins describing to be interactive.

K - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:31:46
I do not mean for this to be in anyway a belittling of your statement. But shouldn't I/we assume that the technology is available. Of course it isn't, but if it is next year or two years from now, it will be there because we expected it to be there. It simply is not reasonable to expect children to be made ready for their future by using 15th century technology. - dfw

my concern about relying on technology to teach a lesson is that there are may times when the techonology doesnt work, leaving u stranded...

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:32:41
Yep, and it certainly happens. When I was in Massachuesetts a few weeks ago, we lost all electricity for the entire day. We made it work though and it turned out being a very useful workshop about technology.
That said, I think that the technology is becoming more reliable than it was, say, five years ago. - dfw

I know kids today

Phyllis Wolfe - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:34:07

creating a vitual world with avatars takes a LOT of time. i have friends who are gamers and they spend hours getting their avatars perfect..

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:34:21
I agree. For me, I spent about a half hour and did everything my self. I lot of people got to the shops in Second Life and buy cool hair, cloths, facial hair, tattoos, etc. There is actually an economy there. People actually make a living designing digital assess (hair, etc.) which they sell in the Malls in SL. Weird? - dfw

Content. Since this is mandatory it would have been helpful if you would have transition the 10% who dont have or understand the tech you

K - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:35:55

Oops! I know today's kids multitask, but for me, if Im doing this, i'm not hearing the presenter.

Phyllis Wolfe - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:36:04

Cont describe into the purpose for the training.

K - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:38:57

These are all great ideas, but really...where is the time?

avmr - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:43:19

I agree, the time it would take to teach the kids how to work the technology would be overwhelming.

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:46:13

I think scratch would be great at home with parents' help

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:46:39

You would be surprised how much faster they learn than we do. I met a 2 year old that knew how to open my iPhone, find angry birds and play

L Cherry - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:47:55

true... they do pick up things easier than we do

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:48:45

With all of this...there is something that is just as important...human interaction.

avmr - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:48:53

I agree that blogging is a great way to get the students writing. They get very excited to see people respond to their writings.

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:53:42

How far does this conversation reach? Could students talk between walls?

Lcherry - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:56:47

We tried giving laptops to every student. The amount of technical problems over ran the learning.

Melinda - 17 Aug 2011 - 15:59:13

Personal Learning Networks are good. I've learned a lot from mine.

Pat - 17 Aug 2011 - 16:03:28

Great information... thanks for coming to Bastrop.
