Yes, but not just as a strategy. I think we need to be lifelong learners, though I prefer the term Learning Lifestyle. I think that we need to practice learning as a lifestyle and do that in front of our students and in front of our communities. This may actually be a potential avenue to earn more respect in the community. - dfw

I know! But we've been brought up to believe that you have to read the whole thing, the who book, the whole chapter. Abundance means more choice, not more information. They will change. They are actually under more pressure than we are. There is increasing conversation about the true value of university as the institution exists now. Think about how expensive it is (at least in the States), and the fact that it is no longer preparing you for a career. It's getting you ready for your first job. - dfw

Shouldn't we assume that? After all, we are among the wealthiest nations on the planet, my country invented the Internet and personal computers, and your country has contributed some of the best and coolest applications. Shouldn't we all have access. Isn't it in our national interests for all of us to have access.
This is not a classroom problem. It's a national problem for each of our countries. that we still have digital haves and have nots is the fault of pathetically short-sited leadership and a reliance on a greed-based incentive system. In my country, we have vast amounts of disconnected people, because they do not provide an appealing enough profit margin for the Telcos. - dfw

I wouldn't say that. But integrating video games should not be our over-reaching goal. I do believe that programming video games, or any type of meaningful programming can be extremely successful in developing math skills. Problem is that this (authentic) form of learning math does not coincide with our prevailing definition of math instruction and curriculum. - dfw

I've asked myself that question often. Should programming be considered a basic skills. I'm leaning toward yes. The goal would not be to make them all programmers. The goal would be to help them realize that much of what is going on around us is based on languages that allow us to talk to computers.
