Hmmm, it looks like Howard Rheingold infected our backchannel with his use of the term "colearners." Guess I should be honored. He is a famous technologist and writer -- and only a little strange (unless you remember the '60s) ;-)

I forgot to mention that Knitterchat captures tweets that include "colearners." - dfw

Ann Great to introduce new ways to use technology 22 Apr 2012 - 12:02:13

Mary Ann Nice tool for collab during presentation 22 Apr 2012 - 12:03:16

You know, I don't think that I have ever used this during a presentation that I didn't learn something from the backchannel. - dfw

AnnL Like the idea you can drop this into a wiki. Hope it becomes a school tool. 22 Apr 2012 - 12:04:09

As I said during the presentation, KnitterChat is a personal experiment and I am constantly hacking it, trying new features. I recommend the following free tools for your consideration:

Bill Hogan Always good to see another tool to backchannel 22 Apr 2012 - 12:04:29

John Brishcar Can I use this in my classroom? I have 1 22 Apr 2012 - 12:04:32

Bill Hogan This is a lot like todaysmeet.com 22 Apr 2012 - 12:06:54

Mary Ann We need to find more ways to use phones in classrooms 22 Apr 2012 - 12:08:29

I am not sure that I agree. As I said in the keynote, we don't need to find ways to integrate technology. What classrooms need is the effective integration of networked, digital and abundant information. It seems that with cell phones, we are trying to find ways to make due with them. If a cell phone screen was the ideal size for instructional delivery, then our textbooks would have been that small all along. We need to find the ideal tool for your students, not make due with what they have. - dfw

Bill Hogan Have to teach kids to use digital print. 22 Apr 2012 - 12:09:08

darlenerankin (Darlene Rankin)

 1. :TXLA12 #:colearners question: do you have student created books on your shelf for checkout? Or a digital book - check out iBook author

18 Apr 2012 - 15:56:54

I am currently converting my latest book to digital with iBook Author, and the more I use it, this more impressed that I am. But we need to get past instructional delivery, and find ways for students to be more actively involved in their own learning. We need to stop teaching children how to be taught. - dfw

John Brishcar Is there any data about reading online? It's different than reading papar. 22 Apr 2012 - 12:11:29

There has been a lot of research, especially with regards to reading in hypertext environments. But I suspect that much of the issue is generational. - dfw

Ann D 22 Apr 2012 - 12:13:22

Bill Hogan Preparing kids for their future 22 Apr 2012 - 12:13:45

Ann Township HS Dist 214 IL also a past TLN Trailblazer here today! 22 Apr 2012 - 12:15:06

Bill Hogan Mobile apps now employs 1/2 million people. 22 Apr 2012 - 12:15:37

And the industry has only been around since 2007. Where did those people learn those skills. Not in high school. They were people who life school with a passion for learning. Are all of our children graduating with that passion. - dfw

Bill Hogan Transformational leadership in schools is necessary for our schools. 22 Apr 2012 - 12:18:14

Yes! But I would suggest that your students become part of that formula. You need to invite some students to be part of your committees, and not the "A" students. Pick kids who are obviously bright, but not good students. We need to reach those kids. - dfw

Laura Rich Where can we learn library conference tools.? 22 Apr 2012 - 12:18:33

Bill Hogan I have never heard of Richard Florida? Anybody here read his stuff? 22 Apr 2012 - 12:19:40

He's not really caught on in the education community. But he continues to be a great contributor to the conversation. He has a blog at http://goo.gl/HU1Hb and he's a great follow on Twitter http://goo.gl/UTmdU - dfw

Mary Ann What is student passion for subject related to? 22 Apr 2012 - 12:20:04

Ann Little difference between virtual and face to face for students 22 Apr 2012 - 12:26:32

Actually, I think there is. With my children, they much preferred to be out with their friends. What happened was that when they came home, they didn't have to leave their friends behind. They friends were almost like roommates.

Great conversation. Thanks! - dfw
