I know of a principal in Oregon who uses a wiki and others use Google Docs. But this makes a lot more sense to me, especially if the principal can go back and comment like I am. - dfw

A while back, a teacher in Colorado, invited Dan Pink to Skype into his classroom and talk with his students. He then broadcast the who thing back out to a handful of other educators he knew, and we all backchanneled the whole thing. It was great commenting along with high school students. - dfw

True! Plus, if the teacher can go back and read the transcript, then he or she knows how on task the students were. Sometimes I am surprised that my audiences are paying as much attention as they are. Of course not all of them are participating. Another angle is to have only a few participate in the backchannel and then make that available to the entire group. Often, I have only the tech savvy educators in a group backchannel, and then the rest of the teachers have access, learning something about their support staff, and their instructional leanings and capabilities. - dfw

It was a conversation I had with a couple of guys right after the presentation. We all continue to learn, even before there was an Internet. I could talk about my personal learning network, back when I was teaching and had never touched a personal computer. But I couldn't have have talked about it back then. It's being self-aware of the learning that we do that will help us to transition from teaching students how to be taught to teaching them how to teach themselves. - dfw

Probably true. It's not one of my standard keynote-style addresses. But someone heard me mention PLNs during the teacher presentation I did a while back for GCS, and wanted me to talk about it with you guys. It's a hard thing to teach, to describe, because the most important part of the acronym is the "P." PLNs are personal more than anything else. - dfw
