Please feel free to edit the conversation with answers and solutions. Simply click Edit at the top right of the page and enter teacher as the password. You can insert text, in much the same way that you would with a word processor. However it is a very primitive word processor. You will see, at the bottom of the page, techniques for formatting your messages.

I think that the use of back channels is great for staff meetings!

But this makes a lot more sense to me, especially if the principal can go back and comment like I am. - dfw

This could also be used in a classroom discussion

->A while back, a teacher in Colorado, invited Dan Pink to Skype into his classroom and talk with his students. He then broadcast the who thing back out to a handful of other educators he knew, and we all backchanneled the whole thing. It was great commenting along with high school students. - dfw

We have several teachers that use today's meet during class to allow students to participate in live group discussions during class.

They are much more focused than we initially expected because it is an intuitive way of communicating for kids.

->True! Plus, if the teacher can go back and read the transcript, then he or she knows how on task the students were. Sometimes I am surprised that my audiences are paying as much attention as they are. Of course not all of them are participating. Another angle is to have only a few participate in the backchannel and then make that available to the entire group. Often, I have only the tech savvy educators in a group backchannel, and then the rest of the teachers have access, learning something about their support staff, and their instructional leanings and capabilities. - dfw

They know what personal learning networks are, we just need to connect them more deliberately
10 Jul 2013 - 13:10:57

->It was a conversation I had with a couple of guys right after the presentation. We all continue to learn, even before there was an Internet. I could talk about my personal learning network, back when I was teaching and had never touched a personal computer. But I couldn't have have talked about it back then. It's being self-aware of the learning that we do that will help us to transition from teaching students how to be taught to teaching them how to teach themselves. - dfw

How random was that presentation at lunch today!!
10 Jul 2013 - 15:57:11

->Probably true. It's not one of my standard keynote-style addresses. But someone heard me mention PLNs during the teacher presentation I did a while back for GCS, and wanted me to talk about it with you guys. It's a hard thing to teach, to describe, because the most important part of the acronym is the "P." PLNs are personal more than anything else. - dfw
