I'll add one of my pet peaves here, and that's the term "science instruction." If we want to promote STEM, then we need to realize that we can't teach it. It happens as students start to think and feel like scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. That happens within learning experiences, not teaching experiences. Science teachers probably do this better than anyone else. But it should be an explice part of your story, of your repertoire. - dfw
One thing I love about what I do is attending conference in areas that are not my usual focus. I love working conferences for farmers. Talk about technology advancement. - dfw

But that's tricky. There no one 7-step process. We tend to focus on the bad information. We jump up and down and get all excited when a student encounters bad information. When it's good, then we just pat them on the head. Instead, we should focus on the good, by constantly asking the question, "How do you know that's right?" If we get students in the habit of find the evidence that the information is good, then the problem is solved. - dfw

If I'm groking you, sometimes the gratification is immediate, but often it's not. The hook is that it is relevant. The experience responds - not someone from the outside. - dfw
The goal is changing people image. Rather than thinking only of the classroom, textbook, lecturing teacher, its about the learning that students are bringing out into the community, and sometimes the learning that is invited from the community into the classroom. - dfw
That's a cool concept. It's authentic. No one will ever stop learning when the leave the classroom, teacher and textbook. We all have to keep learning and want to keep learning. But... When I first started teaching myself to program, I used trade books. However, today, I simply look for conferences out on the Net, between people who are trying to learn what I am, and people who already know. When I find those conversation, I learn from them, and they may have happened yesterday. You know how long it takes to publish a triad book. My only book that had a real publisher took 9 months to publish from submission of the transcript to its release. - dfw
..and it doesn't seem like that long ago. But blogging, and what came afterward, changed the nature of information. - dfw

Help students form the habit of always asking questions about the answers that they find. Ask them, "How do you know that's true?" Allow them to challengee you as well. "Mr. Warlick, how do you know that's true?" - dfw
..and it's a literacy skill, no less critical than reading the information. - dfw
We were challenged to build a rocket in 9th grade. I was the only person to succeed. Balsa wood and a CO2 cartridge. ;-) - dfw
We live in a time of no unanswered questions. The work is in identifying the answers that work. I draw a distinction here that was part of a conversation in an earlier session. There are correct answers, good answers, and answers that work. I propose that correct answers are becoming irrelevant. Answers change as our world changes. We need to work toward good answers that we can defend, and answers that work. It makes high-stakes testing irrelevant as well. - dfw
True. Usually someone recognizes Margaret Mead. I believe that two did today. Interestingly, non-educators have a real problem with this. - dfw
It's Kerbal Space Program, https://kerbalspaceprogram.com. There's a demo version of the software that you can play with. The full version is only $23. In the hours after its release on Steam, March 20, 2013, it reached the top 5 of best sold games. It isn't easy. It's a great example of fun work. - dfw
It means that the best thing we can teach our children today, is how to teach themselves. You know, it's how to act like scientists. The job of the scientist is to learn. - dfw
